Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum & Gift Shop
Presented by the Montauk Historical Society. Montauk Point Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in New York State. The Lighthouse was authorized by the Second Congress, under President George Washington in 1792. Construction began on June 7, 1796 and was completed on November 5, 1796. This 100 foot tower has been part of Long Island's land and seascape for over 200 years and still serves as an active aid to navigation. This is also favorite spot for local and visiting surf-casters, who fish from the rock retaining walls at the base of the cliff in front of the lighthouse. Montauk Point State Park
Ample parking with observation areas, picnic areas, playground, public restrooms. Just a short walk to miles of unspoiled coastline ideally suited to hiking & surf-casting (with special permit). Camp Hero State Park
Located in the area formerly occupied by the US Air Force Base and "Camp Hero" Army base this park has more than just picnic areas, hiking and biking trails. The entrance leads to a large parking area at the top of one of the highest "bluffs" (cliffs) in Montauk where you can see all the way to Block Island on a clear day. There is a road that leads west from the entrance, through the park to several picnic areas and areas where you can park while hiking or biking ride through some of the most scenic trails in Montauk. You can get up close to the Montauk Radar Tower and the amazingly enourmous buried gun batteries left behind from WWII (which you don't even know are there until you are almost on top of them, these "bunkers" are rumored to extend down many levels below ground, where weird mind control and time-travel experimetns are conducted by secret governments, all commonly reffered to as The Montauk Project... when you see these incredible structures you begin to understand why there are so many strange stories surrounding this area). Fee in season. No camping.

Theodore Roosevelt County Park
The site of the oldest working cattle ranch in the US, this is the area where Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders came to recuperate after the battle of San Juan Hill. The parks boundaries extend all the way to the north shore from Oyster Pond, around Shagwong Point to Gin Beach by the entrance to Montauk Harbor Inlet. The county park beach is a favorite among surfcasters, who routinely patrol the shoreline between the inlet and Shagwong Point looking for Striped Bass and Bluefish. RV camping is allowed by permit only. Contact park office for details.

Gin Beach
Gin Beach is a wide opened beach stretching for miles eastward, through the County Parks to Shagwong Point. This is the perfect place to take a swim in the calm waters of Block Island Sound (which is typically much calmer than the ocean.) There are no houses or businesses on this stretch of beach, which is located on the eastern side of the Montauk Harbor Inlet. This beach is the only one in Montauk with a roped off protected swimming area. Lifeguards are on duty from 10am to 5pm. Swimming in unprotected areas is prohibited. EH Town beach parking lot (EH Town permit required). No overnight camping allowed on Town Beaches, but RV camping is allowed on Theodore Roosevelt County Park section of the beach by special permit. No open fires allowed (BBQ grills OK). 4x4 beach driving by EH Town permit only. Public restrooms with showers in parking lot.

Shadmoor State Park
Located between the Village and Ditch Plains on the Ocean beach, this park is perfect for hiking and biking with trails leading out to the high cliffs overlooking Ditch Plains beach to the East and the ocean beach and Hither Hills to the West. A couple of old war time observation towers are still standing in the park, which is where the area derived the name the locals have always known it by, "the bunkers". The parking area is located on Montauk Hwy. (Rte. 27) about 1/2 mile east of the village.

Fort Pond Bay
Nice walk in beach dive site. This is where Open-Water SCUBA classes are sometimes held by local dive instructors because there is a soft sandy bottom gently slopes down, and eventually drops off into very deep water, very fast. Because of its location there is generally not much current. Fluke and Flounder lay in the sandy patches and there are large mussell beds scattered all over.

Montauk Harbor West Side Jetty
A favorite spot for sightseeing, as well as fishing, snorkeling and Jet Skiing, this site is an popular scuba dive site where you can walk in off the beach (near Gosman's). The jetties are made of piles of giant boulders, which extend out into Long Island Sound to about 20-25 feet of water on bottom that is a mixture of rocks and sandy patches. TIP: Tow a dive flag in this area because of high activity. Be careful of lobster pots (and lines) located near the jetties. Never enter navigation lanes. Permits required to take Lobsters and/or shellfish, check DEC and local regulations.

Montauk Harbor East Side Jetty
Easily accessible scuba dive site, where you can walk in off the beach. The jetties are essentially large piles of giant boulders, which extend out into Long Island Sound to about 20-25 feet of water on a sandy plain. Expect to see things like Lobsters, Fluke, Striped Bass and lots of small fish when the water is warmer in the summer months. TIP: Be careful of lobster traps located near the jetties and never enter the navigation lanes used by boats. (Note: EH Town parking permit required)

New York State Marine Fishing Regulations

Infraction of these regulations will result in stiff penalties, as anyone who has experience fishing in Montauk will tell you. The New York State DEC officers in this area take their responsibilities very seriously and are extraordinarily adept at finding & ticketing violators.
Atlantic Tuna and HMS Permits and Regulations
If you are planning on fishing for Tuna (Bluefin Tuna, Yellow Fin Tuna, Albacore, etc.) or any HMS (Highly Migratory Species) including Swordfish, Marlin, Sharks, etc. you MUST have a Tuna permit or HMS permit for your vessel (even if you are fishing Catch-and-release). These permits can be obtained online at the National Marine Fisheries Service web site (hmspermits.noaa.gov) and can be purchased / printed immediately.

The Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) is dedicated to the sport of amateur surfing, to the operation of a program of amateur competition for surfers of all ages and abilities, and to the establishment and preservation of free access to a clean shoreline and ocean environment. The ESA is the largest amateur surfing association in the world, with a current membership of over 7000 surfers. Each summer the ESA holds surfing competitions at Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk, drawing hundreds of spectators and surfers from all up & down the coast.
